close-up or closeup in filmmaking, television production, still photography and the comic strip medium is a type of shot, which tightly frames a person or an object. Close-up portraits feel more intimate than portraits drawn farther away because they allow viewers to really examine subjects’ physical features and expressions. Close-up portraits minimize dehumanizing distractions, such as clothing and social status, that can hinder viewers from relating to portrait subjects in that way.

“It was just all about the person—not about their clothes, not about the environment, not about their background, not giving any hints to their social status.” – Martin Schoeller

We deeply encourage you to explore this genre of portrait photography and send us your very best close-up child portraits by the end of this month.
