Q: Hi Katarzyna! First of all, we want to congratulate you on winning our Monthly Contest CPC Portrait Awards! How does it feel to be a winner?
A: Thanks a lot! That’s awesome.
Q: Can you introduce us to Katarzyna Widmanska? What is your background? Where do you live? How old are you? Do you do photography as a full time job?
A: I was born in Krakow, Poland , where I still live. I graduated fine art studies.
I’m full time fine art, fashion and portrait photographer. Also a filmmaker and cinematographer .I do a lot of classic portrait and fashion photography, as well as series of thematic pictures. I depict various themes and motifs. I also love to mix genres, for example : old paintings aestetics with pop culture, fairy tales or sacrum/profanum themes.
My art work has been published in many magazines, albums and book covers and presented on individual and collective exhibitions in galleries and museums in the country and abroad ( Poland, USA, UK, France, Italy )
I used to work only with adults but from over a year I work also with children. I find it very inspiring! Working with children I focus most of all on painterly and creative style of photography.
Q: How do you prefer to be called? Katarzyna or Kasia?
Q: Can you please share with us how did you create the series you’ve submitted to our contest? How did you get the idea for this series? How long did it take to create it? Where did you find costumes, models?
A: I wanted to create something different from sweet and lovely children photography so I smuggled some darker narrative from my main art work.
Inspired by baroque couture and paintings I decided to blend it with a fantasy genre.
I imagined there is some planet in distant space where only children rule …
And here they come : Prince of Red desert, Lady of Misty Lake , Princess of the Frozen Mountain, Queen of North See and Hairess of Silver Throne.
Creating this project took two months . I invited very talented artist Katarzyna Konieczka who created amazing stuff. Due to her impressive fashion designs I knew she will be perfect fit for this series . I have selected and invited best models for each set. They did really great and professional job! Kinga and Kuba Krzykowscy, Oliwia Mituniewicz and Wiktoria Przerwa. Chapeu Bas! I also have to mention jewellery designer Danka Czapnik who supported this project with her amazing jewellery. I’m the author of styling and makeup.
Series of photographs by Kasia Widmanska that were submitted to CPC Portrait Awards, November 2019!
Q: Your entire submissions to this contest got really noticed by the judges. Can you tell us how did you develop your style and how long you are into the photography?
A: So nice to hear that, Thanks!
I’m a photographer for over 12 years. At the end of my studies I discovered that photography was the best medium to express myself . My style is often called painterly photography, it’s mainly because during my art studies I took an awesome lesson from the great masters of painting .
Q: Do you have an official education in photography?
A: No. I’ve finished art studies what gave me solid background, but as a photographer I’m a self-taught.
Q: Where and how do you learn photography?
A: Mainly by myself. First I ‘ve read a lot of books, then I kept on taking photos and working on improving my workflow both photography and editing. Which I still and will always do. It’s a constant process.
Q: What were some of the most important things you found along the way in relation to the development of your photography?
A: Keep your heart and eyes wide open, especially the third one 🙂
Q: How would you define your photography in a few words?
A: It’s very hard to define your own work. I’d prefer to leave it for my viewers.
Q: You work both with children and adults. How do you blend those 2 worlds and present to the public?
A: My main work differs from this children one, that’s why I have to divide them.
Fortunately you can have 2 different Instagram and Facebook accounts 🙂
Q: Who are your favorite photographers?
A: Paolo Roversi, Annie Leibovitz, Sarah Moon, Richard Avedon, Eugenio Recuenco.
Q: Where do you seek inspiration for your work?
A: May sound a little bit trivial but I think everywhere.
Q: What moves you in life?
A: Art, especially music
Q: The quote you live by?
A: I don’t have one but my favorite is Allan Poe’s: “All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream”
Q: What is in your camera bag? What camera body and lenses do you use?
A: Nikon d700, nikkor 50 mm 1.4 and nikkor 35 mm 1.8
Q: What about lightning?
A: I love daylight. In my studio there’s awesome light from the window so I work with it a lot.
Besides that I use constant lighting, I hardly use flash light mostly due to it’s “artificial” nature.
Q: Your editing style is very recognizable as well. Do you edit photographs in Lightroom or Photoshop? Do you have some favorite actions/presets that you are using for edits?
A: I use Photoshop but the great amount of my editing takes place in Camera Raw. I use only my personal presets.
Q: What is your proudest moment as a photographer/artist?
A: When people feel and express their emotions while looking at my photos.
Q: Do you have any advice to offer us fellow photographers and artists about photography?
A: Search your own path and follow it, be inspired but do not copy others. Work on creating your own recognizable style.
Q: Can you share some of your favourite photographs from last Monthly Photo Contest at CPC Portrait Awards?
A: All photos are great! but If I had to choose I agree with your main choice Andrey Weyers .
Q: In your opinion, why photographers should participate in high-quality contests?
A: The better quality contest the better audience I suppose.
Q: Any advice for photographers who are considering to take part in a photo contest?
A: Frankly speaking I ‘m not the type of contest person. Your contest is maybe third I participated in my whole life 😉
