Q: First of all, we want to congratulate you on winning our Monthly Contest CPC Portrait Awards! Can you tell us how does it feel to be a winner?
A: Was very exciting to wake up to the news!
Q: Can you introduce us to Lizzie Gilmour? What is your background? Where do you live? How old are you? Do you do photography as a full-time job?
A: I live on a small lifestyle block, south of Oakura (New Plymouth, New Zealand). I am 31 years old. Initially, I worked on our sheep and beef farm and studied Mechanical Engineering. Now I am stay-at-home mom and photography is my part-time job. I have a home studio.
Q: We cannot wait to hear more about the winning photograph. Can you tell us more about the model, concept, all the sweet and interesting details regarding how you created this artwork?
A: I had photographed Kadin’s little sister with her Cane Corso puppy and was very keen to also photograph the brother. The family goes to my daughter’s school, so we organized this photo shoot soon after the school photo shoot. I wanted to capture both subjects looking away from the camera. It actually took quite a while for something to catch the dog’s eyes and make him look out the window since the dog just wanted to sleep.
Q: Do you have an official education in photography?
A: No none.
Q: Where and how do you learn photography?
A: All self-taught. A whole lot of trial and error.
Q: How did you get your start in photography? What were some of the most important things you found along the way in relation to the development of your photography?
A: I lived in The Netherlands for two years and did a lot of travel photography. I wasn’t fully into photography until I got back home to New Zealand. I realized I should properly pursue it because I truly love to photograph.
Q: How would you define your photography in a few words?
A: Emotive, compelling, timeless.
Q: Who are your favorite photographers?
A: Anya Ponti, Niki Boon, Bill Gekas
Q: What inspires you?
A: Old paintings, especially Charlie Russell.
Q: What is in your camera bag? What camera body and lenses do you use?
A: Canon 5d mk4. I use the Sigma Art 85mm for my portraits.
Q: What about lightning?
A: Elinchrom DXOne with 180cm PLM. Super simple and inexpensive.
Q: Your editing style is very recognizable as well. Do you edit photographs in Lightroom or Photoshop? Do you have some favorite actions/presets that you are using for edits?
A: I use the same preset for everything! One that I developed myself. Most of my editing is done in Lightroom, very little photoshop. I don’t edit skin.
Q: What is your proudest moment as a photographer/artist?
A: Merging together an image of a baby (who passed away not long after) I took over two years ago with a recent image of his older siblings. Delivering that, printed and framed to the Mum.
Q: Do you have any advice to offer us fellow photographers and artists about photography?
A: Ignore what everyone else is doing and just do what you love to do, how you love to do it!
